The Banshee (pronounced /ˈbænʃiː/, BAN-shee), from the Irish bean sídhe [bʲæn ˈʃiː] ("woman of the síde" or "woman of the fairy mounds") is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. Another request, this time from Mary C! The style has changed a little to add a bit of detail, I felt it was needed, I hope the style is similar enough to the first one for them to work together. BTW, I took a picture of myself as reference, so I'm the model for the Banshee, lol.

A is for Asrai...
It's my 50th post! I'm halfway to 100, and I just came up with an idea. For a little while my blog is going to be a bit more specific. I want to do a digital drawing of a mythical beast for every letter of the alphabet, yep all 26 of them. I will still be doing photo manipulations, just much less of them and much more digital art. I think this is just what I need, I was beginning to rely to heavily on the photo manipulations, so this should shake things up and challenge me.
After much deliberation (and suggestions from friends, thank you Karyn S) I settled on "Asrai" for A. According to Wikipedia "In English folklore an Asrai is a type of aquatic fairy, similar in some ways to mermaids, nixies, selkies, sirens or morgens." I'm choosing a very simple style. I felt the dot made it modern and reminded me of playful children's alphabet images, but the image itself is done in silhouette and reminds me of Greek pottery, I think it works.

The Maiden, The Mother and The Crone
The triple deity is a concept that pops up in many religions and in old religions, especially Celtic ones this triple deity manifests in a feminine way as triple goddesses. Most interestingly to me is that in this version each godess represents a phase of life: the maiden is youth and purity, the mother represents fertility and creation and the crone represents age, wisdom and a bit of the darkness that comes from experiencing too much. Together they show the balance in all life and the wisdom in not straying too much towards one spectrum. It reminds me a bit of a passage from the bible (specifically Ecclesiastes 3:1) "To everything there is a season". For more about the triple goddess go here. Killer Used To Be A Bunny...
Now he's a seven-foot, eleven inch -- counting the ears -- bright blue floating donkey who is also insubstantial. A character from the third book in the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede "Calling on Dragons".

Wilhem the Animagus
I was looking at an owl sculpture in our living room and decided to draw an owl, but not just any owl, he would really be a Wizard and his name was Wilhem. He insists on wearing his hat even in his animal state, which means this hat would be a bit too small for him in his human state. He would of course get grief for this. "Wilhem, you should just leave the hat behind!" But Wilhem knew it could be misplaced, stolen or ruined and wanted his hat with him at all times. "But Wilhem, however do you fly with a hat on?" What sort of Owl can't fly without a hat on? he wondered, I'd have to be a poor flyer not to manage a hat. "But is the buckle really necessary? It must add some weight" this last comment was from Headmistress McGonagalll. She must think me a weakling! thought Wilhem. There are owls that hunt small deer for pity's sake, I should hope I could handle a brass buckle!

Frog Kissing....
Inspired by listening to the song "Frog Kissing" by the Brodingnagian Bards. This is a little messier than I wanted but for a 2 hour completely digital drawing with no pre sketching or lineart I think it's not bad.
So the reason why this is fantasy is the girl believes in the fantasy that she can find her Frog Prince.

Enchanted Forest Chronicles Comic...
I have never made a comic before but have been meaning too. Last night I couldn't get the scene from the end of "Dealing with Dragons" by Patricia C. Wrede in which Woraug's evil plan is discovered and he suffers the consequences for behaving in an un-dragonlike way. I may do more comic strips from this book, this was fun.

Photo-Realistic Ganesha
The other day I did a drawing of Ganesha and I still can't get him out of my head, so I challenged myself to a photo manipulation of him. I think I'm so fixated on Ganesha right now because he is known as the "remover of obstacles" and the patron of arts and sciences. So, I guess I just need some Ganesha in my life right now. As always I've posted the art to Deviantart with references.
In other news I've decided I need to take Sundays off, not for a religious reason but because it's my husband's day off and he demands attention on Sunday. So, from now on Sunday will be used for brainstorming and sketching for the rest of the week and will hopefully improve the overall quality of the blog.

The Fantastic Ganesha
I love doing digital drawings and I feel I'm good at them, the only problem is I get carried away and when I do a digital drawing it means I have no time to do anything else that day. I have worked on this drawing for 5 straight hours and I had to fight for those hours, it can be difficult to convince others that me drawing is more important than what they want. So, I'm not sure I'll be able to do a drawing like this again, unless I do the sketch and outline one day and the coloring and shading the next, that may work. So, anyway, this is Ganesha, normally I'd give you a summary but I'm exhausted so here's the wikipedia article.
I did use some brushes on this the link to the creator can be found here.

Fantastically Groovy
Today I decided I needed a background of my own, and what do I think of when I think of wallpaper? If you guessed retro wallpaper you guessed right. If you didn't guess retro wallpaper you don't know me very well, lol. So, I took two of my earlier creations and tinkered them a bit, used a brush I found on deviantart and voila, I hope it doesn't hurt anyone's eyes too much.
+=
Update: After applying the background I'm wondering if it isn't a bit much for a blog displaying art everyday, as in maybe something less bright would be less distracting, something like this:

Looks How I Feel...
As in very very cranky! I wanted to make two images today both dragon related one a photomanipulation and one a drawing, after sinking an hour into the manip photoshop decided to freeze. Alright, so down to just one image. I work on this dragon drawing during which my colored pencil tips break about 6 times, leading me to the conclusion that prismacolor isn't nearly as kickass as people had be believe. Then I go to scan it into photoshop and try to rotate the image...and photoshop freezes! Aaaaaaarggggh!

Fantastically Sad...
I meant to make another fairy photo manipulation, this photo and the vodka I drank had other ideas I guess and I didn't even realize how sad it was until someone pointed it out. Well, life has sad as well as happy...this portrays a child angel, which leads you to think it was a child who died. It is a sad fact that children die quite often, I hope I don't make anyone cry.

Let Me Out
Today I decided to do another fairy photo-manipulation, these things are as addictive to make as Swedish fish are to eat, seriously.

Another Day, Another Gnome...
This time I used a reference from the book "Gnomes" by Abrams. I found a illustration of a gnome girl knitting and decided to recreate it digitally, this is what I accomplished:

Gnomey kind of day....
I think I'm about to go on a gnome kick, it was bound to happen eventually, and I seem to be better at drawing them than I am fairies, lol.

Photo-Realistic Birth of Venus
The idea behind today's post was to take the classic work from Boticelli, his Birth of Venus and reinterpret it as a photo manipulation. I think I was pretty successful.

Yarn Fairy Revisited...
I took yesterday off, I'm slightly embarrassed to admit but I partied a bit too hard on New Years Eve and wasn't feeling up to drawing anything. The brain was on off mode. That's the first time in 25 days I've missed, I'll try to make transgressions like that very few, I'll reserve it for times I'm really ill. Anyway, all I could think of today was how everytime I've made a fairy it didn't come out so well and wanted to fix that. One positive thing has already come from this experiment, I'm starting to realize my strengths. I definitely excel at digital drawings over pencil drawings. Here's my fixed up yarn fairy...I changed the colors as well to ones more pleasing to me:
I think this one might actually be suitable for a tshirt design. Anyone out there agree?
